SERIOUSLY.... SERIOUSLY?!
Every time I get back in the groove of things, I'm hit with another health issue! This has been going on since last August now.... I'm getting pretty frustrated and angry at the situation. I know this one is not a huge issue but still.
I've had my first week of 5 running days with a total of 27 miles and I was doing pretty well working on my thesis too. I had a 12h night of sleep on Saturday but just tought it was from exhaustion not getting sick! And this morning at 3:30AM, I started coughing and a sore throat woke me up. Now, I can't get back to sleep.... grrr and its a Holiday, I could have slept in! Sooooo mad!
I blame it all on the stupid weather we've been having, -20 °C one day and +10 °C the other. No wonder we're all screwed up!!! Anyway end of my rant right here... I'm drinking hot lemon tea right now and gobbing lots of cold and sinus medecine... hopefully I won't get it too too bad!
Total miles for the week-end:
Saturday 11 miles @ 11:20 min/mile
Sunday 3.1 miles @ 10:52 min/mile
Happy Family Day everyone! (I wish my family was here)

Well Ken couldn't have said it better :" You know what happens when we have plans... Something seems to creep in".
Yep it does. To make a long story short, I started having this stomach-intestinal bug for about a week now. I tried to get rid of it with pills but its not working. So, after I called the Healthline last night. The man-nurse told me to forget about sugar and fat for 2 days. I'm allowed to eat rice, potatoes, soup and chicken. Some easy digestible things like canned fruits and yogourt. Fun times.
So, I'm not so sure about that 12 miler anymore =( This sucks, so tired to be sick!!
I did run 4 miles last night in 45:06, it was pretty windy and I gave in a good effort. I'm thinking Sunday might be a better day for my run if I feel better by then. Who knows???
On the bright side, this is my fur-baby's birthday! He's 4 years old today and it's also the anniversary of his adoption by me, 2 full years of love =)

FREAKIN MONO GET OUT OF MY BODY!
So, my bloodwork shows that the mono is still active as there are enough antibodies in my blood to get a positive result back. The doctor said this was quite unusual as it has been 4 months since I was first diagnosed and it should be gone by now. But that explains why I am so tired all the time again. Also, my Iron, folic acid and Vitamin B12 are all very low. The Iron is about 5 time lower than normal, the folic acid 30X and the B12 about 3 times lower than average. She thinks that since I am still fighting the mono my body is using these ressources for that. At least, I know what I have and it should be easy to control with supplements. I will have to check back in January and see if it improved after the Holidays.
I need this vacation so bad right now!! I haven't run since last Thursday and wanted to go for a spin tonight but I ended up napping from 5-6... I think I'll have to cut a day of running. It's just too much right now. I am so tired of having these stepbacks. It's really frustrating to not being able to do more....
I CAN'T WAIT TILL SATURDAY AND GO BACK TO MONTREAL!!
(By the way, Fran, I am eligible for OHIP but since I wanted to move back to Quebec after I am done, I always kept my Quebec health card. Now, I'm not even sure I am going back there so I might switched, its a real dilemma!)

HUM... THIS DOESN'T START WELL!
So, it's week 1 of marathon training and total miles ran is 0. =(
Everyone I know is sick or starting to feel sick so it's no surprise, with my super immune system that I caught that cold. I'm thinking a cold on week 1 is better than marathon week so I've been resting and waiting for it to go away. I just started to sleep better last night as my nose is not stuffed up anymore. I missed the weekday runs but I will do my long run on Saturday (9 miles). I'm still hesitating between 2 plans. Hal Higdon marathon training plan Novice 2 tweaked to run only 3 times a week and the FIRST plan. Considering that I'm starting this training late and that I'm in the middle of intense lab work and writing my thesis, running 3 times a week will be an achievement itself!
Yesterday was Halloween and although I did not dress up this year. I dressed my pooch for his nightime walk. It was only a hat but he was sooooo cute!! As you can see with this picture, Rocky does not seem too impressed....

Have a good week-end everyone! =)

I'M ALIVE!!!
And slowly getting better =) I have no longer any discomfort and symptoms left from the mono, except the extreme fatigue, but that's easier to deal with than all that I had. I've had some complications, swollen liver and spleen and had to do a series of more blood work and an ultrasound. Everything is back to normal now. But at some point, I felt like I would never get through this and that is a pretty shitty feeling....
As for running, the doctor said to get back to it slowly and take it easy. I miss it so much though, I really want to go for a run right now... But my mother who has been in town for 2 weeks now, helping me with my dog walking and house chores, is strickly forbidding me to run. I know I am 26 years old but she'S a pretty scary woman when she wants too! lol Seriously, I also think that it is better if I wait until I come back from my trip to San Francisco. I am leaving on Sunday for the AFS conference, I am giving a talk on Wednesday and I'm very stressed about it (it's not done yet...)
I kinda made peace with the idea that I will not PR at the Detroit Half. Just being healthy, running it and having fun will be enough.
Happy running to those who can =)

SURPRISE, SURPRISE...
I am still feeling very tired and I now have a sore throat so the doctor asked me to do some more bloodwork to check the difference with last week's. I had no clue what to expect when I got there and they said the nurse wanted to "talk" to me... The surprise is that the mono came out positive this time =( I still haven't talked to my doctor about it but I was quite shock to see it positive after it was negative last week. I am trying not to freak out about this and to take things slow. But it is very hard at the moment to work less, I am going to a conference in San Francisco at the end of the month and I have to prepare my talk.... One day at a time, right?

UPDATE FROM THE SICKIES...
Not our best week in the Melançon’s household. Rocky has been vomiting and has had diarrhea all week… yeah not fun! And I’ve also been pretty sick: nausea, chills, lymph nodes swollen, headache, fever, over tired and appetite loss (that one I can take! lol). The doctor thought I had mononucleosis and that really made me freak out! I mean I am trying to finish my Ph.D. here. I am leaving Windsor at the end of December and everything’s got to be done in the lab by then… so yeah pressure! I am happy to report though, that it is NOT mono =) They have no clue what I have, but whether it is viral or bacterial it should be gone in a week or so (I am on antibiotic). Phew!
But I think I just realized that this is my body giving me a sign that I am not a super human. I cannot achieve everything and there will be more opportunities for me to concentrate on running. I have to listen to my body and I think it’s telling me that I am doing too much. I wanted to go with a Half-marathon training program of 12 weeks-5 days a week of running but I think it is more reasonable for me to downgrade this to 9 weeks-3 days a week… I am taking a full week off and maybe more. I’ll see how I feel. Right now I sleep 12h a night and nap 1-2 times a day…. I am disappointed but I can’t manage everything right now.

REST, COLD FX AND ORANGE JUICE...
Will help you get rid a of cold!!! YAY! I feel totally fine today! Resting this week-end was the best thing I could have done =)
I ran 3 miles yesterday with my dog. After spending all day inside at the air conditioning, I didn't realise it was 28oC outside and that we had a smog advisory... We stop every 0.5 miles and he drank some of my gatorade. My poor fur-baby looked like he was going to have a heart attack around mile 2... so we slowed down. At some point, I even picked him up and kept running holding him!! Note to self, he can run 3 miles when it's cold out. He's just not a runner =( I think I've resigned myself now! Average pace = 15:03 min/mile!!!! OMG that was the longest 3 miles I have ever ran! BUT my dog didn'T have a heart attack =)
On other news, I went to an atheletic bra clinic at the Running Factory last night and the guest speaker was Silvia Ruegger. She's holding the title of the fastest canadian marathoning women (1985) with a time of 2:28:36!! Oh man was she inspiring! She was explaining her story, that with 4 months before the National Capital Marathon in 1984 she decided to switch to marathon training, her previous specialty being the 1500m and her longest long run was 12 miles! She had an intense training, more than 100 km per WEEK! And in the end, she won the NCM marathon (1st woman) and was one of the 3 canadian women to qualify and participate in the first time women marathon at the Olympics! AND THIS WAS IN 1984!! I had no clue women could not do long distance running in Olympics until after I was born, this seem so surreal!
She definitely inspired me and totally pumped me up for Sunday! I am so excited and cannot wait to race and give my best at the marathon! This was exactly what I needed after getting a bit down with catching a cold. Anyway, I could write a lot more about her but I'm not sure it interest everyone! If you have a chance to hear her speak go for it!
Happy running!!

IT'S OFFICIAL....
I have a cold.... I'm all stuffed up and can only think about sleeping. My head hurts and I cannot breathe properly. I just bought that cold FX remedy... hopefully this can pull out some miracle in time for the marathon. I've been struggling with the thought of missing my last LSD tomorrow (8miles). I rarely miss runs, I feel like I'm being lazy if I even just think about skipping a run... I will see how I feel tomorrow morning but I feel tiny bit silly to even considering going... It's just 8 miles and I know it should not affect my performance on marathon day....
Other than that, I felt pretty zen about the marathon... not as excited as the previous one. I guess it didn'T help that I had a crazy week at school + some personal turmoil... I went back to read my blog entries from last October before the marathon and it got me all excited again. So, I know when I'm going to stand on the starting line, game face will be on and I will do my best
I decided to share my expectations with you and will try to not be disappointed if I can't pull it off my first goal...

1) Finish in 4:30-4:40 (Pace = 10:15 to 10:40 min/mile)
2) Finish between 4:41-4:49 (Pace = 10:45 to 11:00 min/mile)
3) Finish between 4:50: 4:59 (Pace = 11:05 to 11:25 min/mile)
I do not think that my first goal is out of reach. According to MacMillan and my fastest half-marathon, I could do 4:33. Hopefully, the weather gods will be on my side and I will feel good on race day!
Here is the week recap
Tuesday 4 miles @ 11:07 min/mile
Wednesday 3 miles @ 11:33 min/mile with my pooch
Thursday 4 miles @ 10:39min/mile
Have a good week-end everyone
