16 MILES HURTS!

This was a long run... 3h11 (11:58 min/miles). I felt great until mile 12 when my right knee started to bother me... it was quite bad, I took several walk/stretch breaks but it was even harder to start again... I hope this is nothing serious, I'm getting all worried about it... The thing is that my knee doesn't bother me 2-3h after the run and in general. So, I'm hoping this is nothing serious.... This week, I will buy some kind of knee brace. Does anyone of you have one?? What kind should I buy? Should I see a doctor before purchasing that kind of stuff? When I was talking to my dad on the phone today he said to me: "Maybe you won't be able to complete the marathon..." (translated from French!).... BUT I WANT, I NEED TO COMPLETE THE MARATHON. This is something I've been working really hard at and I want to do it so badly!! I guess I'll see how this whole-knee situation goes this week. The long run next Saturday is only 12 miles and this little step back will certainly be great for my knee.

I hope everyone had a great long run =) Happy running!!!

Maybe you need to cut back on your weekly mileage a bit..... you're pushing REALLY hard, maybe taking a few days off would be beneficial to give your joints a chance to recover.

If not then anti-inflamatories from the Doctor have done me wonders in the past! :P

I have a knee problems also. Someone recommended glucosamine as a reliever of joint pain. You can get it from your local pharmacy. I have no idea if it works but I'm willing to try anything. As for knee braces, I have one of those velcro ones that can be easily attached. I wouldn't recommend the pull over ones since they're a hassle to remove.

Thank you guys for your suggestions. This week is a lower milleage week so that will be great for my knee.

Also, I've decided to go to the St-Denis Centre tomorrow and see if I can talk to a sports therapist and see what he thinks about my knee and what kind of braces would be best for me (if needed).

Arcaner, thanks for the glucosamine tip, will definitely try it, we never know, it might work! I hope your knee gets better soon.

I get knee pains as well. Sometimes, it's a sign I need to get new shoes. Others, it's also a sign i'm doing too much mileage. I had a sore knee this morning after yesterday's long run, so I took today's run gingerly. It feels okay now.

One thing to think about is knee exercises. If you can develop the left and right sides of the kneecap, it'll make you stronger..

I like to ice after a run sometimes. The 10-minute on, 10-minute off thing. Others swear by ice baths (I haven't done this). But I find taking a day off, or going easy if you must run, helps too. Better to not stress it too much and make it worse. Good luck.
